Why We Say Bulllet-Resistant Not Bullet-Proof

Is Bullet-Proof Glass A Real Thing?

When you shoot glass it breaks right? Well, no, it is not that simple. In this day and age, there are ways to keep glass from breaking. One way is to buy “glass” out of different materials like acrylic. But what if you already have glass installed and don’t want the massive expense of replacing it all. Well then, another way to keep glass from breaking when it encounters high impact force and severe stress environments is, by adding film layer on top of the glass, effectively making it bullet-resistant. We use the word bullet-resistant because there really is no such thing as bullet-proof glass- With enough time and concentrated effort or a big enough caliber bullet, glass will give way eventually. The picture below is a test we did firing 5 bullets into a window we treated with C-bond security film.

As you can see the window broke and shattered but the glass stayed intact. This means no flying glass debris in the case of sudden impact.

At Window Film Austin, we get a lot of questions about the efficacy of bullet resistant glass, below are two common questions in regards to security windows and our typical answers to these questions:

How Does Bullet-Resistant Glass Work?

The best explanation of how C-bond works come directly from their mouths. According to their site:

“The unique qualities of C-Bond enable ordinary glass to dissipate energy by penetrating beneath the molecular surface and reconfiguring a hybrid spider web framework within the microscopic fibers of the glass structure.”

In layman’s terms, C-bond basically changes the glass on a molecular level to making it strong and keeping it from shattering.

What Else Does Bullet-Resistant Glass It protect from?

As you obviously know bullet-resistant glass protects from bullets. However, it also is a protective barrier from:

-Bomb blasts
-Hammer blows
-Flying debris
-Hurricane force winds
