About Window Film Pricing

Every building is unique and so is every client. While a certain type of film or method of installation may be a good fit for one particular project, another project could have completely different requirements. That’s why window film pricing tends to have some variance. We’ve compiled the following information to help you understand the factors that go into calculating the cost of installation as well as what to expect for your project.

Identifying Your Goals & Needs

The first thing that needs to be established are your project goals. In other words, what outcome do you hope to achieve? This will determine the type of film that will need to be used for the install.
Glare: Do you have trouble viewing the electronic devices in your home or office due to excessive glare?
Fading: Does your home or business contain any furniture, flooring, or artwork that could be damaged from fading?
Safety: Have you experienced any security issues in the past? Do you have any particular safety concerns?
Comfort: Does it sometimes become uncomfortably hot or cold inside your building?
Energy cost: Would you like to lower your energy expenditures and improve the insulation of your building?
Aesthetics: Do you have any decorating or aesthetic needs that need to be addressed?

What factors affect the total cost of installation?

There are three main factors that affect the cost of a window film install. These include but are not limited to the cost of manufacture, project complexity, warranty, and quality of service.
Cost of manufacture: Cheaper films are typically the product of polyester that has been treated with chemical dyes. They do hardly anything to improve your building or windows. High quality films contain metal, porcelain, and other technology that makes them more effective. These films are typically more expensive to manufacture.
Project size & complexity: The size of the project also has to be taken into consideration as larger projects will require more time and product. Also, if installation is difficult or requires a higher level of skill, this could also affect the total price.
Quality of service & warranty: Quality of service must also be taken into consideration. A larger, more experienced company may charge more, but will be able to get the job done more efficiently and produce better results. Larger companies also usually offer a warranty with their service.

Estimated Costs for Film

Most of our films typically range between $4-24, though premium and specialty films may be priced higher. The information below can help you determine the estimated cost of the film you need. Please take note that actual costs may vary per install.
Spectrally selective: Spectrally selective films range from $9-18/sq foot and are used for blocking out heat, glare, and uv rays.
Low-E: Low-E films start at $20/sq ft and work to stabilize indoor climates and improve occupant comfort.
Safety & security: Safety and security films range from $8-16/sq ft. Security attachment systems cost an extra $2-5/LFT. Security films offer protection against robbery, vandalism, and other threats.
Bullet resistant: Bullet resistant film averages around $125/sq ft. Bullet resistant window systems offer buildings and occupants ballistic defense.
Decorative & frosted: Decorative and frosted films range from $6-12/sq ft. Decorative films are used for altering the appearance of a building or enhancing privacy.

The “Real” Cost of Window Film

The owner of Window Film Austin, Martin Faith, had a conversation with a client about the cost of window film. Read his story to find out how some window films are “free.”

I got a call from an existing client asking us to come out and install some more of our “Free window film” I was confused but he insisted that we did the west side of the house and he got it for free and he sounded really happy. After an awkward silence on my end he eventually he said. “When Mike came to my home in 2012 I asked him how much I could save on my energy bills. He told me most people pay the film back in 3-5 years. So I got out my old bills for the previous 12 months and wrote down how much I spent each month. Then for the past 3 years or so I’ve been keeping track of how much I save each month and as of last month I have now saved the same amount as I paid you guys for the film. So there you have it. The next time someone asks me how much does window film cost all I have to say is “It’s Free!”
